Day 24: $60 Kobe Beef

Yes, today there was only one thing happening, eating Kobe beef.  As my rail pass expired the day prior, I had to buy the ticket out to Kobe on my own, which was 800 yen round trip and a fairly reasonable price for such a long ride.  After waking around Kobe for an hour and a half there are really only two things I can say about the city. 1) its incredibly western, with more italian and french restaurants than japanese.  2) kobe beef is hard to find.  In fact, over my whole day there, I only saw 2, yes 2 places that sold it.

The place I had sold about an 8 ounce sirloin with salmon salad, veggies, and bread for 5000 yen.  Considering dinner prices for larger steaks can go up to 12,000 yen ($150) the lunch price was not so bad ($60).  Watching the chef cook it at the table was even more entertaining as you could see the love (and efficiency) in cooking the perfectly marbled piece of meat.  No words can do it justice, as although it is incredibly fatty the meat just falls apart in your mouth.  Chewiness is something that is absolutely gone in Kobe beef, and it is amazing.  Bonus points to Japanese Steak Sauce which beats A1 anyday.  I'd get it again even if I wasnt full when leaving.

Only a few more days in Japan, so I bought the Osaka pass (2700 yen for 2 days) to cover costs of transportation and attractions.  To get the best use of my money, I spent the ret of the night planning what to do.
