We got up early today to make the 90 minute drive South to Ohiopyle State Park to go white water rafting in the lower youghiogheny river.  This was the first time I've been rafting since getting back from Europe where I went in Austria.  The rapids were of similar difficulty, class III-IV, and decently priced at around $50 for the 3 hour trip over the holiday weekend.

When we arrived we checked in and waited to find out who we would be partnered with.  Originally we got grouped with another couple who seemed to have been rafting a lot.  Unfortunately they wanted us in groups of 5 and put us with an old father and his two younger kids [13/17].  It seemed like it might be ok cause the father had done the harder versions of this river before, but apparently the knowledge of how to row goes away with age...

The trip started off ok, I was put as the leader and guided the raft throughout the trip.  Most of it worked out well.  The older child would listen and do what I asked, but the younger one and father would ignore half the orders or row two times before stopping.  I figured out halfway through it was easier to just do the steering myself and let them be oblivious.

The rafting was really good although the river was low for the time of year.  My girlfriend fell out and we had to wait for another raft to bring her down river to us.  Other than that we had a great time and really enjoyed ourselves even with the river guides acting stupid and 26 year old guides flirting with high school students.

After we went to these natural water slide formations that we read about where you could slide for a few hundred feet at intense speeds.  Well... what is advertised as smooth slides, they really mean halfway smooth with whipping turns that throw you into textured sheered walls.  I beat myself up really bad on that, and hurt my tailbone on the way down.  As I got up going 'ow, ow, ow, ow' my girlfriend said 'i changed my mind' and we left and headed back to Pittsburgh.

Pictures coming soon.  My main computers RAM went kaput and I am too lazy to get my external hard drive on my lap top.
