I chose to do a Contiki tour for the luxury of not having to worry
about booking transportation and hostels in all the different countries
I wanted to go to. Also, the tours went to stops that I would not have
necessarily done on my own, such as Switzerland or Austria. While
contiki tours cost slightly more than doing it on your own, this
convenience makes up for it in my opinion.

I found there were many ways to save for the tour that I am going on which was $2155 for just the tour.

Pre-Book Promotions:
Depending on the length (and as a result, cost) of the tour, if you
book through contiki or a travel agent before the following years dates
come out they will give out a discount that helps compensate the cost
of inflation from the previous year. From 2007 to 2008 the price of the
European Whirl went up about $80, and I received $100 off for
prebooking before the new dates came out. All that is required is $200
down, and a month that you are most likely going to travel. When dates
come out they let you select a date, and if none are convenient you can
cancel and get your money back (within a one or two week period).

Early Payment Discounts:
If you decided early on your tour you are eligible for discounts based
on how early you pay off your tour in full. The most common are 6
months and 4 months in advance, although I believe a 1 year in advance
discount is also available. This discount is also tied to the length
and cost of the tour. For the European Whirl I paid mine off in full
before 6 months and received $79 off.

Referalls:
Contiki has a reference program set-up if you are referred by a previous
traveler (Valid in the US only). In doing so, contiki will give you a
$100 voucher with your travel documents for excursions. This helps a
lot especially when doing all the excursions can range upwards of $1000
if not more. The only requirements is that the tour is 10 days or
longer, must be paid in full 45 days before the tour begins (if
booked prior to 45 days before departure, otherwise paid at the time of booking),
be purchased in the United States, and the referral must be activated
before booking. If you are interested in receiving this referall
through contiki please email me at jonesjek@notes.udayton.edu and be
sure to tell them that I referred you when booking to confirm.

These are all the discounts that I have done, and I received $279 in
discounts for my trip. Contiki offers additional discounts for multiple
tours, returning traveler, and groups

Multiple Booking Discounts and Friend Discounts:

If you have been a past traveler on Contiki, let them know and you will get an additional 5% off.

If you are booking two tours back to back, minimum of 7 days, you can receive $50 off.

In addition to these, contiki offers 5% off per person for a group of 4,
7.5% off for a group of 7, and 10% off for a group of 10, so if you're
traveling with a group, be sure to get this discount as well!

Triple Share Discount:

On most superior tours (hotel tours) you can get up to an additional 5%
off for opting for a triple share room instead of a standard double.
Some of the concept and budget tours do not offer these as most rooms
are quad share.

Travel Agents:

Some travel agents may offer discounts not specified on contiki. I did not go through a
travel agent because I hate going through a third party on anything. If
you go through a travel agent make sure they can get you any of the
discounts offered through contiki and the referral.

Contiki has changing discounts all the time, and some may be better than others
for your specific tour. Check http://contiki.com/deals for more
information about the current deals.
