This is where I've been for the last 3 days. No idea what caused it, I probably couldn't even hazard a guess. But must have been something pretty grim!
Unfortunately because of this, we missed our trip to the Colca Canyon. I was so looking forward to it and we had 3 days of trekking planned. The second deepest canyon in the world, beautiful oasis at the bottom, rustic wooden cabins to sleep in and amazing condors. But sadly it wasn't meant to be...
In the run up to the trip, I thought I could manage it and that I'd be fine, however 3 hours before the bus arrived I took a turn for the worst and knew I couldn't sit for 7.5 hours in a minivan to get there. We had no way of contacting the bus company, so they turned up at our hostel at 3.15am to collect us and Andrew had to go and explain in his best Spanish that 'Mi novia está muy enferma'. Thank you Paul Noble for these handy Spanish phrases.
We have had to extend our stay in Arequipa until I get better. Unfortunately there won't be another opportunity to visit the Colca Canyon because on the 25th we are due to get a bus to Puno to see Lake Titicaca, so hopefully I will have fully recovered by then.
We managed about half a day of exploring in Arequipa before I started to feel unwell. We saw the Monasterio de Santa Catalina, the Cathedral and Plaza De Armas. Arequipa seems pretty nice, but we have only been in the centre where it is deemed 'safe' and in any case, it is just another city.
