Where I stayed
So I feel me and Steph have quite quickly grasped the skill at crossing the road... basically you walk out avoiding cars and all the motorbikes will avoid you! Obviously do look both ways but you can kinda judge which way they are going to go around you but otherwise your pretty set. Theres soo much beeping its crazy, really is used as a 'I'm here!' or 'Don't cut me up!' tool so although manic it does seem pretty safe, plus it helps they're all going at about 20mph.
We walked around the lake and then headed to Ho Loa prison to find out about how detained women and men were treated in the Indochina War (appauling torture and death sentences for women aged 14!) and the Americans (extremely well!). It was really interesting and worth going to have a look around, rather shocking how the Vietnamese were treated in particular by the French colonialists and in sharp comparison how the Vietnamese treated the Americans so well especially after they'd been shot down for bombing.
To lighten our souls we headed to the water puppet performance which was...interesting to say the least. Very bazaar little puppets dancing on water telling little stories. The show was accompanied with Ladies singing with percussion and a Dan Bau which was a pretty cool instrument to listen to.
After a hectic cultural day we joined people who worked and were staying at the hostel for a bbq on the roof terrace followed by a night out in Hanoi. I was rather pleased as I managed to catch the f1 in one of the bars so could see Button's winning performance, woo! Good night out as the people here are nice and generally Vietnam is a very relaxing slow pace of life.
