I arrived in Kathmandu where I spent only 2 days. I could recognize a lot of places and wasn't as lost as 3 years ago! The second evening, I had been sitting in a restaurant for almost 20 minutes when finaly a Nepali guy came to me. I gave him my order and he told me he wasn't the waiter. He was one of these guys who go around looking for foreigners to become his friends..........for a small fee of course! The amazing thing was that when I said I come from Canada he recognized me! Turns out he is the guy who took me around for a day when I was in Kathmandu 3 years ago! I couldn't believe that he could remember me. He also knew where I stayed 3 years ago and where we went together! These guys have amazing memory, but I guess they need it if they want to make money out of the poor tourists! So he sat down with me and I had to buy him a burger! He kept going on and on about how the last time we meet we didn't take the opportunity to get to know each other better....... and that I should go stay at his place for free and that we could get married that way I could live in Kathmandu! Can't people just be nice and glad to talk to you! He ended up leaving after I told him several times that NO I would not go and have a beer with him!
Sri Lankans, Indians and Nepalis don't see the sign on my forehead that says NOT INTERESTED, OUT OF THE MARKET, STAY AWAY signed A HAPPY AND INDEPENDANT SPINSTER! There isn't enough space on my forehead (eventhough I wear a headband now that my hair has grown) to translate the message in the language of the country I am visiting. Or maybe it's the hat? That's it, i'ts the hat! I wear a hat almost every day. Next I will take off my hat to see if they get it............
The next day I met the Canadian guy I had traveled with in Ladakh. He had just returned from Pokhara and had good advices on the trek for FREE! He is crazy though! He did half the trek in flipflops and crossed the pass in shorts! I must say he is a bit fat, can't stand shoes and always feels hot, but still........... He said they had lovely clear weather all the time. Unfortunately, when I got to Pokhara it was very cloudy and I couldn't see the moutains at all! The last time I was there the ambiance was very nice because of a small festival going on. It felt different this time with more tourists and no ambiance. The number of paraglidding businesses must have triple in 3 years. I saw the same French guys who were working there 3 years ago and now they run their own business!
