Time seems to vanish at the beautiful Lake Atitlan, as it is such an easy existence. I finished my time at the lake however, by moving on to San Pedro which was still chilled but with significantly more going on than San Marcos.

Anna and I stirred early for yoga on our last morning in San Marcos, before heading to the nearby jetty, for the short ride across the lake. After asking directions a few times, we eventually found the hostel we were looking for. Whilst the rooms at Zoola were rustic, to say the least, the communal areas were wonderful. A long stretch of low tables, with colourful cushions and low slung lighting, led down from reception, past the bar and on to the reason we were there. A beautiful lakeside pool lay at the end and with the awesome views, hostels don't get much better!

The pool was a big hit and a wonderful way to cool off, without having to dip in the lake; which was sadly significantly more rubbish strewn and polluted, in San Pedro. The waters had also risen higher this year, flooding low lying lake-side houses and spilling their contents into the lake. The next couple of days were then spent largely in the sitting or reclining position. We bumped into a seemingly endless line of school and hostel mates from Antigua and sampled the local restaurants and nightlife. The nightlife ranged from fairly standard pubs and bars; to impromptu bonfires with belly dancing and fire jugglers; to a slightly more sedate series of card games, with accompanying rum.

Still feeling pretty zen on my last day there, I headed off back to Antigua, whilst Anna decided to explore the lake a little more. The shuttle back was pretty nerve wracking, as it careered around tightly curved uphill stretches, however I made it in one piece and back into the welcoming arms of Casa Amarilla.
