We've decided to stick to Highway 1 as much as we can because of the spectacular coastal scenery. We travelled further through the Big Sur today going through Carmel and Pacific Grove. During our coffee stop, in the car park of a shopping centre, I decided to pop into the Pharmacy for a bottle of whiskey for Des. God bless the check-out chick, LeAnne, who asked to see my identification, to check that I was over 21. That made my day. She noticed on my driving license, that I would be 57 the next day and wished me happy birthday in advance. LeAnne was a gem, she’d won me.
After lunch, we thought we’d take a tour of Pebble Beach, and turned off the highway to do so. We were stopped at a boom gate by a security officer, who asked where we might be going. We told him we were going to take a ride along Pebble Beach
The next turn off we took, along the Rio Del Mar, lead us to the Aptos Area Beach where we were able to negotiate a room with breakfast, heated pool and spa and internet for $79, not bad for a seaside area. I immediately went for a swim and spa, the water was beautiful and warm and the kids in the pool were friendly and talkative.
When Des and I walked along the beach we discovered we were right next to Seacliff beach and the next beach along was Brighton, just like at home.
The Aptos pier had a concrete boat at the end of it, which was broken in two and resting on the sandy bottom of the ocean. We couldn’t get access to it to walk on it, but it looked curious just lying there, being used as a rookery for the sea birds.
We were in Santa Cruz County and all these beach suburbs were in Monterey Bay, we felt very much at home and enjoyed being there.
It was the eve of my birthday (in the USA. In Australia it was already the 18th of April) and I received many SMS texts, emails and comments on my travelpod. I spoke to family and friends on Skype, so, although I was not at home for my birthday, I felt I was remembered. And to top it all, Des made dinner for us, which we enjoyed near the pool. The weather was lovely.
