Where I stayed
El Bramadero Hotel
Des and I were awake at five so really made an early start to the day. We gained an hour coming into Costa Rica yesterday and were in bed by 9pm. It had rained hard during the night so we expected some wet or muddy conditions when we set out, but you wouldn't know it had rained at all. The drains and the curbing are huge and must be able to cope with a large amount of water. It was also still quite a warm morning so the water would evaporate quickly.
The young girl at the desk of the Malniche Hotel suggested I fill my thermos with freshly brewed coffee instead of boiling water. I could have kissed her, this was a treat, fresh coffee on the road. We only rode about an hour, when Des picked a beautiful spot on the hill side of a lovely area of coastline in Costa Rica for us to stop and spoil ourselves with the coffee and some sprits cookies
The temperature was rising quickly, although it had been beautiful to ride in the very early morning. Before 9am it was already in the thirties, but at least it wasn’t as humid as it had been the day before. We encountered quite a few trucks on the road and on the hills, progress was slow, as the heavy vehicles geared down. We also met some road works which we had to stand by for about 10 minutes in the hot sun, with the motor like a furnace underneath us. Eventually it was our turn to continue; we had already decided to pull over a short way ahead at the nearest shop for an icy drink.
We travelled at about 80 to 85 kilometers per hour because of the winding road and traffic, and also because the scenery was lovely and speeding past isn’t always the best way to go. There are all types of tropical plants here, some trees spreading right across both sides of the road. The flowers are beautiful with orchids growing wild. The colours of the hibiscus, bromeliads, and variegated plants are vivid and eye catching. Many of the trees are hosts for other plants and creepers, and vines dangle all the way to the ground. Some trees look like they are standing on their roots, resembling big bundles of cable, and the girth of the trees are more than 3 or 4 meters
Unfortunately we have seen some road kill too. Yesterday we saw a sloth on the side of the road. Its distinctive claws and long arms very visible. Also a lemur monkey didn’t make it across the road. Other monkeys seem to pick the wrong time to cross the highway too, it’s such a shame they get run over.
Because of the heat, we decided to find accommodation at lunch time and settled in the El Bramadero Hotel in Liberia, Costa Rica. The first thing we did after Des brought both bikes into the Hotel complex, was to go for a swim in the Hotel pool. Mmmmmm….. that felt cool.
