The Hostel Colonial's push bikes were free so we four decided to go out the next day and join the happy citizens of Uruguay. Half a kilometer down the road we noticed a Thrifty rental business. This looked like fun, so I went and hired us all a golf buggy for the afternoon. Lou and Lynn brought the push bikes back to the Hostel and we set off down the coast sightseeing. I’ve never taken so many photos in one day, the old bull fighting ring, the old town of Colonia, school kids, coastal views, it was all there. We had such a great day, we laughed and carried on like kids, hooning around with the best of them, in the open top vehicle with no seat belts. The atmosphere of joy and freedom made us realize how over governed we are in South Australia, in fact Australia, particularly where driving regulations are concerned.
Uruguay does not seem to be a rich country, but the people are very friendly and welcoming. We seemed to make a bit of an impact on the locals with our over-loaded motor bikes. Many people stopped to chat to us, which we enjoyed a great deal. This is a highlight of travelling, you meet so many nice people.
