Kalimera Greece. Unfortunately the Blue Star Ferry didn't offer sleeping accommodation on the 9½ hour trip from Italy to Greece, so it was sit up or lounge around all night until 6:30am. We were not allowed to lie down on the couches in the lounge and in any event, there was a disco happening from about 11pm to 2am.
We disembarked with bleary eyes, drove 20 kilometers up the road, parked in a stony, shrubby area and popped the camper out for a sleep. We didn't even bother to level up, we were so exhausted. Greece has lots of cicadas which chirp all day long, but surprisingly they sleep at night like we do
We had lunch by the lake at Ioannina before settling in a gorgeous little camping ground called Meteora Gardens. It was an old camp ground and was a little run down, but what really attracted us to the place was the sign 'Swimming Pool with filter'. We met an American couple, Barbara and Greg who had a swim in the pool with us and imparted quite a lot of good information to us about Greece and Turkey.
Washing up our dinner dishes by about 9pm, we felt a few large drops of rain. Nothing to worry about just yet. By the time we had everything packed away, chairs and tables stowed, the lightening was really brightening the place up. The thunder was quick to follow so we gathered it was quite close. From the dry security of the camper we could see several young people scurrying about in the heavy rain. After a persistent downpour lasting about an hour, there was 8cm of rain inside about 5 tents at the lower end of the park. There was just too much water too quickly to keep the tents and their contents dry for long. Everything was soaked. Poor kids. All the young folk bunked into 2 on-site vans belonging to the park owner. In the morning you wouldn't have known it had rained at all.
