To have our car Carnae signed in Ijmuiden upon reaching Holland turned out to be a fiasco, as the Duane/Customs had not seen the form in many years and it was way out of date. Three officers invited us into their office while completing a few phone calls to HQ. They escorted our 2 vehicles with 2 of their own to Amsterdam's head office for further information. The chief officer was very nice about the whole thing but thought it was a waste of time. It was because it was a public Holiday and they were not very busy that the officers took the time to help us, otherwise it may have been a whole day affair.
2˝ hours later we were on our way in the middle of Amsterdam, driving on the 'wrong' side of the road (without escorts), bit scary so we parked in A'dam Centrum for a coffee fix before braving the streets again
It's very multi-cultural in A'dam with hardly a Dutch shop owner in sight. The big Dutch hot chips with mayonnaise were yummy and any choice of cafés for a quick joint if desired.
Walking in the drizzling rain became less and less fun and were glad to be on the highway to my cousin Wilma's. The Navman (whom we've nicknamed Mary) has been invaluable as we just programme our destination address into it and she takes us straight there. Luckily Wilma had a delicious dinner of Boerenkool met worst waiting for us. And for desert chocolate custard and vanilla custard.....poured from the same carton..... how is it possible?
