The Mother Road

We made a quick stop for lunch in Williams, Arizona whose claim to fame is that it was the last city in America to have its section of Route 66 bypassed. To be honest, even though it didn't seem to be in our CAA Atlas, driving through these parts there are so many signs for 'Historic 66’ that Matt and I weren’t even sure if the route was still functioning or not. I have since found out that the actual highway, once the ‘Main Street’ that ran all the way from Chicago to LA, was removed from  the US highway system in 1985. We have spent quite a bit of time on the 40, which in many places essentially replaced the 66, but when you go through small towns you see a lot of signs for the Historic 66 which is now considered part of the National Scenic Byway system.
