A Glorious Day

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that our arrival at the Grand Canyon on Wednesday night was one of the most glorious moments anyone has ever experienced. Not only did we roll into the park just as the golden sun was starting to dip towards the Canyon (which we were both laying eyes on for the first time ever) but at essentially that same moment we received news via text that the Habs had defeated the Penguins in a Game 7 thriller to advance to the third round. Glorieux, indeed.

We marveled at the Canyon for a while, and after a Coleman Stove pasta special we retired to the van – it’s only twelve bucks for a camping a short walk away from the Canyon. We opted to stay in the car, mostly because it was dark and we didn’t feel like dealing with the tent, but it turned out to be a good choice as we were a bit shocked by the temperature: after battling the heat so often in recent days, we were caught off guard when temperatures on the Canyon rim dipped below zero.

We planned to get up early to try to obtain a last-minute permit to camp in the Canyon bottom. Camping at the base is limited, but a handful of same-day passes are available each day due to cancellations and no shows. You need to get there early though – we were advised by the Campsite Ranger to arrive to line up before the office opened, which is 8am. So I set my watch for 6:00 and we went to sleep early, ready for a big day.
