Nature, We Missed You!
We decided that we needed a break from city life, and we had been craving some exercise and fresh air since we missed our original plan to hike in the Smokies due to inclement weather. We did some quick research, and Oak Mountain State Park seemed like a good choice - close to Birmingham, where we were headed anyways (to split up the drive to New Orleans).
Since it's early in the season, the campground was quiet and we had a nice spot away from the handful of RVs that dotted the park. It was really nice to be away from neon and crowds and noise. We were right next the lake and enjoyed a great swim, very refreshing on a hot day - the temperatures have been climbing steadily the further south we go.
We also finally hopped in our bikes and got in a good ride. Not too long - it was about 3 miles each way to the beach we went to, but it was pretty hilly and frankly we're both out of shape! It felt awesome to get the heart rate up and the legs working though, and we had a perfect reward at either end of the round trip with a nice cool lake to hop into, either at the beach or at our campsite.
Oak Mountain is a beautiful place. It's pretty developed (there is a golf course and stables within the park) but the sites are fairly secluded from each other and the scenery is beautiful. At night, there was more noise than Nashville - but it was cicadas, bullfrogs, owls and forest birds settling into their nocturnal routines.
Just what we needed :)
