I wrote this poem for my dad's birthday. I owe a lot to him for passing on the genetic backpack!
Hand-in-hand
I've travelled the oceans in your eyes.
Swallowed by swelling pupils
In to southern seas,
I drowned each time you teased me
With your stories.
I've seen sunsets on the canvas of your face.
Lively red lips
Stretched across glowing cheeks,
Like dawn's fingers
Playfully probing the sky.
I've climbed mountains on your shoulders.
Traced my path
Along the map of your neck
With idle thumbs,
As you held me there.
I've felt the pitter-patter of summer rain.
Kisses spilled on to my skin
With the gentle rhythm
Of droplets,
Falling from your lips.
I've heard the sweet song of 'la bise'.
Words you whispered,
In the depths of night,
Flew from a doorway
To rock my dreams.
But Dad the rainbows were conjured between us.
Your light dried my tears,
My rain soothed your burns,
And bridges were built towards lands
We travelled hand-in-hand.
