The next morning, although we slept through the complimentary breakfast, we had much more luck getting to the IES center, which is the headquarters for the Study Abroad program. It really was just 3 blocks away. We finally got to set out luggage down and get a bite to eat. We met our friend Charlotte from Georgetown and went to a small pizza/panini place for lunch. It was really good! After a short tour of the IES center we boarded the bus (again, with the luggage - ugh!) to the small town of Stresa on the Lake Maggiore, about 1.5 hours north of Milano. The lake really as beautiful as they say, I just wish I would have seen it on a sunny day and not in 40 degrees and rain! But I imagine it would be amazing, the town is adorable (although almost everything's closed - it's off-season, of course - no wonder the whole hotel was available!), there's a great view of the Alps, and for some reason, hundreds of palm trees. The orientation lasted 2.5 days, and was mainly meeting, with delicious meals (2 bottles of wine per 10 person table, of course) and one boat trip around the lake. The trip was very nice (but very cold) and we saw beautiful castles on the islands (including the tallest palm tree in the world, apparently - in northern italy?) and we even stopped on the small Isola dei Pescatori (Fisherman's island). Afterwards, my friends and I had a great lunch at one of the only open restaurants, which was DELICIOUS and very cheap! Overall, it was a lovely trip, complete with free food and (NOT free) lobby bar. Now, on my way back to Milano to see my apartment!
** I apologize for my lack of pictures, my camera ran out of batteries!!
