Benvenuti in Italia!

Then came the first contact with real Italians in Italy - we had to find the ticket office to buy train tickets to the city. SUCCESS, had a real conversation with the airport workers and THEN bought a train ticket! Now comes the rough part, though. After a successful (albeit long and uncomfortable) train ride to the city center, we set out (100lbs of luggage each and all) to find our hotel. Now, according to my previous calculations, it was about 3 blocks away from the train station, and it really was. HOWEVER, we ended up going the exact opposite direction for many more blocks, then making a huge circle, asking various Milanese (more successful conversations!), attempted to hail a cab only to find out that you have to call one in advance, you can't just hail them on the street, and finally after about 1.5 hours, made it to the hotel. The Hotel King on the Corso Magenta in Milan turned out to be really cute, and perfect for what we needed. The porter had some trouble getting the luggage up to the room (e' pesante, pesante - "it's heavy, heavy!"), but we made it. The rooms were small but clean and nice, although you could hear everything through the walls. The shower was the smallest I've ever seen (you'd really have trouble getting washed if you're much larger than me), but the water was hot, and that's enough for me. The elevators were about the same size, by the way. Italian TV in the room is always interesting (we watched One Fine Day, dubbed by some lovely Italian people - incidentally, George Cloony is not nearly as charming without his real voice). But after dragging the luggage all over town and not sleeping at all the night before, we could hardly move off the bed, even to eat - we survived on the Chex Mix my mom bought us to eat on the pane (thanks, mom), I wound up not being able to fall asleep till about 1, only to wake up at 4:30 AM, only to fall back asleep at 5:30, and sleep till 11:30. We almost missed check-out at noon! Jet lag is a wonderful thing, isn't it?
