My weekend was certainly blog worthy. Went to a lovely diner of 'African food' made by my colleague from Guinea. You may remember Guinea as the long skinny country beside Sierra Leone, or the country with the most coups. Then off to rooftop patio that are becoming a staple for the NGO community. The next day I woke up, went to the suber-merkazi sooq (outdoor market) and picked up a heap of eggs fruit - which are essential for a desert trip. I had rounded up 5 incredibly different colleagues earlier that week and now was going to put them in a land rover and drive north through the desert. After a few stops (we need schwarmas in the desert) we arrived at the beautiful pyramids of Meroe (3 hours away on good highway). We arrived at the pyramids, wondered, gasped at the lack of tourists and the quality of some of the pieces.

Then it was time for camping. I have never camped like this in the desert: under the stars, one small blanket and a mat. Being 100 km from the nearest city the stars were the brightest I have ever seen them. I watched Orion dot his way across the sky. It was a beautiful night with a Guinea, Kenyans, Afghan, and Sudanese. Such a learning experience.

The next morning we rose before the sun came up had a bit of breakfast and these desert nomads appeared out of nowhere on their camels. We played some football (soccer) with them (did I mention I was the only girl on this trip?), and then they offered to take us on a ride.

Yes, I rode a camel. It is nothing like a horse. Nothing. But they sure are cute. I spent 2 hours on one, and that I have to say, is enough.

Yesterday was back to work,

Oh and I adopted a kitten somehow. It was being pestered by the neighborhood dogs and kids so I took it in and gave it a bath, a schwarma, and pulled some ticks off of it. She has a deformed left foot - it looks like a muscle that isn't strong enough. Anyway - I named here Schwarma, as it is the only food she will eat. I am such a sucker.

Anyway that was my weekend - how was yours?
