We were awake early this morning after a crap nights sleep, even though the bed was comfy. I felt like I had bugs crawling all over me, I was so itchy.
We packed up quickly and went down for our included breakfast but there was really only some very glue-like porridge and some waffle mix left. I had a small amount of the boo-goo with sultanas then we hit the road, headed for the airport. There were no problems adding Shell and I on as drivers; me with just a copy of my license, and the Dollar staff seemed uninterested when Rich told them we had our international driver's licenses as well (I'd left mine at home). In the process of adding me one of the women helping us noticed that she and I had exactly the same birthdate!

After an hour or so on the road Rich offered me the wheel and I drove the rest of Oklahoma on in to Texas. Ahhhhhhhhhh at last! Love love love driving, particularly on a trip! The only drawback is the inability to take photos......most of the time.....

We stopped in Chandler, where the author of The Book of Jerry lives and has a gallery. Wooohoooo! He was at home and chatted with us for quite a while, signing Shell and Rich's book, and highlighting parts of the route on the EZ66 map that should not be missed. We did miss lots today to try to make up time to spend in Santa Fe and Albuqurque. One door closes, another door opens.....

We lucked out when we decided to stop before Amarillo in McLean, to eat at the Red River Steakhouse - the best food since landing in LA. Absolutely famished, having missed lunch, we ordered catfish, fried onion rings and jalapeno peppers, then salad, vegies and a sirloin cooked to perfection.

There was a concrete floor and corrugated tin roof, photos of cowboys, rodeo riders, wranglers and country singers on the walls, along with cattle skulls, deer heads and masses of memorabilia. A guitarist played down the back.

We're in TEXAS!

The woman who served us was lovely, and turned out to be one of the owners (with her husband)

After rolling outta there to the car I drove the hour or so in to Amarillo asking all the while - Is this the way?, passing by The Big Texan where we had originally planned to eat. Even considered trying for the 73oz steak dinner. There are lots of motel options but we chose the Best Western Santa Fe tonight, just off the I 40 in Amarillo.

Tomorrow, we plan to have a proper look inside the Big Texan and find the Cadillac Ranch, then, we'll be almost halfway!
