Concern turned to annoyance when we realised that our flight to LA was not listed because it wasn't to be a flight to LA but a domestic flight to Brisbane. Not only that, but our check in luggage had to be picked up and re-checked at Brisbane AND LA! Apparently the computer systems had been upgraded since our booking and the old wasn't talking to the new properly. And so on.
Despite this inauspicious beginning the leg across the Pacific went smoothly flying with Virgin - great entertainment and reasonable food - until hitting LA. There, I sat in the Naughty Corner with several other plebs awaiting the pleasure of a customs officer's attention
It took two hours....the place was empty before I was called up and the magical stamp bestowed upon my passport. With effort I had kept my impatience to myself and still had time to get a coffee before the flight to SF. After all that they didn't even search my bag, and I had accidentally left my nail file etc in my carry-on!
It was a quick flight along the beautiful California coastline to San Francisco, where we had to circle a bit because of fog. Cab to Glen Park, wait for Huriya's mum to arrive with the key, then investigate and unpack briefly before heading off to catch a train into the city. We have booked a small 2 bedroom house through Airbnb, and it's brilliant! It's so nice to be back - what a lovely city, and with great history. The walk to the BART was about 15 minutes, down very steep hills - everyone knows what THAT means - at some point an ascent. It's a pleasant afternoon although not all that warm, and we stroll along Embarcadero to Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, where there are seals on the wharf, shopping and food. We pass a crab shack called Pier 23 and we flag it as our dinner venue for later, on our way back. Sure enough, Pier 23 has music, chowder and fish taco's. We're happy. We're here, and we've got flowers in our hair!!
