The first 100 feet into the forest was already so dense and slippery, and the climb only got steeper and steeper. Initially it was my instinct to try to get my shoes as little muddy as possible, which would later prove pointless. We climbed up slippery rocks using roots and trees for help, and at times we even simply had to claw our hands into the mud to keep from falling backwards causing a domino effect. About 1/3 of the way through the hike we came to a small series of waterfalls with pools at the bottom of each, so we all slid down into the pool and took a nice relaxing dip/bath to cool down and rinse off the mud that wouldn't come out. We even drank the water straight from the stream and it tasted so fresh and cold...ahhh.
Then we once again commenced our grueling climb up a mountain, down a little bit, then up an even steeper and more slippery mountain. Two hours later, we reached the top and recieved our sweet reward...We got to see an amazing view of Suva and surrounding areas, and it was absolutely breath-taking. Well....after nice peanut butter and banana sanwiches and bhaja mix (the best snack EVER) we realized that the only way back was to go down the way we came. By this point our water had run out and our muscles were begging us to rest. But no! We could do it! It was only 50 times harder going down the slippery rocks and clay without falling face first only to tumble until a rock or tree caught our fall...However, MIRACULOUSLY no one got hurt, minus A.J. being miserable because he ripped his pants BAD on the way down, and I don't think all of us laughing at him helped :oP All in all, it was such an experience and one of the hardest yet most rewardiong climbs of my life. The pictures I put on shutterfly do not do it justice, but hopefully you can imagine to some extent how incredible of a climb this was..
Ok, now I'm going to rewind a bit just to last week...
First of all, I am going to verify that YES I am here for school. As of now I only have two classes because our last required class that all ten of us have to take is still getting scheduled. My lectures are actually pretty fun, and after my marine biology lecture, Liane and I usually go to the Seafood Bistro that's on south campus to get some coffee and/or lunch. Then every night we all sit around trying to figure out what to do, which usually ends in us playing some games Liane made up or watching a movie on Derek's laptop.
Oh yeah, I haven't mentioned much about the food that we get here. Well, we get breakfast and dinner 7 days a week at our house, which is pretty sweet. Breakfast is just lots and lots of toast, Wheatbix (bars of cereal) and sometimes fruit or hard-boiled eggs. They also have beans or spaghetti too put on the toast. Weird, huh? Dinner is pretty much the same every week. Monday nights are vegetable curry, Tuesday is stew ( my favorite, and then we also usually have chop suey, fried rice, or shephards pie other nights. So far I have liked everything we've had, but this Wednesday was not a night we enjoyed... Well, mutton seems to be pretty big here (sheep) and it's pretty gross. For dinner they made mutton with dalo leaves (big green leaves) and they cooked it in coconut milk. I usually like the leaves, but that night even the leaves were just mushy and the mutton was unbearable. So us girls left after sitting at the table no more than five minutes, and we went and ate pizza at Pizza man instead :o)
moving back to Friday night, the girls decided to have a girls night so we could all get to know eachother a little more. A.J. and Kai ended up coming over, but it was still fun anyways. We all made Kava and played a fun drawing game that Liane showed us. Saturday was Kai and Christi's birthday, so Miriani got a cake and decorations and we had a salad and shephards pie for dinner. After such a grueling day, that was the best dinner ever. After dinner we all cleaned up and the guys came over for a pre-going out dance party. It was lots of fun. We then went out to a few clubs, but I pooped out after dancing a lot and came home with Derek around 1:00. Ahh, I love dancing.
Well, I know these entried must be long and hard to read, but if you made it this far I appreciate it!
