Arriving in Venice has definitely been one of the high points of our trip so far. The campsite we are staying at is lovely. We are camped right on the edge of the water with a fantastic view of Venice on the other side. There are ships passing by all the time, some suprisingly large. The girls wanted to go fishing with their nets but couldn't reach the water unfortunately. Sam is in his element collecting all the flotsam and jetsam and already we have bits of driftwood strapped to the roof of the car! He's made a couple of tables and some other furniture for the awning so far!
We've really had the chance to spread out and make a nice home for ourselves - we've even got the hammock strung between a couple of trees. Its very nice to be stopped in one place for a bit having travelled on quite quickly up until now. There are lots of birds which Daisy has loved putting food out for, including a couple of robins which are Daisy's favourite (you may remember that she asked for a robin for her birthday!) At first the site was really quiet but after christmas started to fill up and by New Year had got really busy
Venice itself is absolutely beautiful - we've spent quite a few days wandering about there. Its such a novelty having to take the water bus to get anywhere. Sometimes they get really crowded - it's like going on the London underground in rush hour. Fortunately Sam doesn't get seasick on little boats like these but he does feel really wobbly for a while afterwards!
You can see from the photos what a great time we had in St Marks Square, feeding the pigeons - the kids really loved that. We also enjoyed a quick peep around the cathedral. In the run up to christmas it was very festive with lots of Father Christmas's wandering about giving out sweets. Its such a beautiful place to just wander about.
We also took a trip out to Murano to see where the glass comes from. Had a lovely day there with a visit to one of the factories and got to see a glass horse being made.
We had a lovely christmas. Luckily Father Christmas found us and we got some great presents. The girls got new bikes which is what they were hoping for and have hardly stopped riding them ever since.
Unfortunately Sam was ill on boxing day with a tummy bug (he was really sick - we think because he drank some of the water from the campsite rather than the bottled stuff) and then the next day I woke up with a really heavy cold which Sam and Daisy now have too. So that has put a bit of a damper on things although we keep reminding ourselves that we are not ill just any old where - we are ill in Venice!
On New Years Eve Sam and Millie got the ferry in to Venice and had lots of fun seeing the New Year in although Millie said she found it very tiring and in fact slept for some of it! They went to the funfair and then joined the crowds in St Marks Square. Daisy and I were tucked up in bed! On New Years Day we went in to Venice for the last time, and all went to the funfair. Now its time to pack up again and on to Rome.
