Where I stayed
Headed off for Derry. I'm never sure whether to call it Derry or Londonderry as you can get in trouble if you call it the wrong thing to the wrong person. I'm pretty sure Derry is safest. Had a bit of a drive around trying to work out where we were going in the city & picked out a random car park
Headed down to Rossville st. The street is a site of spiritual and cultural significance famous as the focus of resistance to British presence in the six counties. It's now dotted with murals that commemorate some of the significant moments of the resistance as well as memorials to people who have died due to hunger strike or in the Bloody Sunday battles. The murals are huge, covering the entire end of buildings. The artists describe the murals as follows: “This is real art done by the people and for the people. That’s what makes it authentic. That’s what gives it meaning in a world where meaning has all but been destroyed by ambition and the greed for money. It honours our past. Our work commemorates the real price paid by a naive and innocent people for simple democratic rights.”
