Upon driving into Queenstown we were simultaneously hit with jaw-dropping scenery of lakes and mountains combined with a massive backpacker vibe which was only accentuated whe we arrived in our first Queenstown hostel, Nomads. Crammed full of the latest Kiwi Experience kids and your typical Brits abroad looking for the ultimate night out in NZ, we immediately knew the week ahead was not going to be a quiet one!
However, before the drinking extravaganza began, there was one issue that had to be resolved: to bungy or not to bungy...?! Jen remained steadfast in her wise decision not to throw herself off a bridge and instead was proud mum on the sidelines, camera at the ready. After some gentle peer pressure, Wells soon found herself standing next to George on the top of the Kawarau Bridge on a beautiful sunny day in Queenstown, ready and waiting to bungy. To quote Quinny, our bungy instructor, "everybody screams" and scream we did! After the initial terror of shuffling forward on a tiny ledge and the 3-2-1 countdown, ti is only pure exhilaration as you hurtle towards the river for a quick dip and bounce back up again. An awesome experience and we were both ready to do it all over again if we could have afforded it!
A trip to Milford Sound was a perfect recovery day albeit a polar opposite of the bungy adrenaline. At the most famous of the Fiords in NZ, we took a boat trip through the Sound where the vast mountains and cascading waterfalls took our breath away and swiftly filled up our memory cards.
The rest of Queenstown merges into a haze of jager, cocktails served in teapots, a Big Night Out bar crawl, a human pyramid and body shots. Our particular vice was a drinking establishment by the name of Buffalo where our hostel keys ensured we had 241 drinks all night and naturally the bartenders started to recognise us and provide us with endless Black Sambuca. You know it's a good night when you find yourself in a jagermeister t-shirt the next morning! And, of course, who could forget the Fergburger... this is one of Queenstown's proudest attributes and we can certainly see why- burgers the size of your head with fillings from 'Cockadoodle Oink' to 'Big Al' are served from 9am to 5am and are probably the best burgers we will ever have... needless to say we dominated this place!
AJ, Wells' boyfriend met us just in time to see one of the absolute highlights of the week, watching George limbo her way to winning a canyoning experience... from sliding down rapids, abseiling into canyons and jumping off waterfalls; the icy clear waters of Queenstown canyons proved to be a sure fire way to get rid of a hangover as wells as seriously good fun!
Don't worry mums and dads, we did also go to some rather idyllic botanical gardens and watched the sunset over Queenstown while contemplating how strangely fast these first few weeks have gone....
Lots of Love,
Jen, Wells and George xx
