Going to lunch to practice English!
Entry 21 of 112 | show all | print this entry |
Today was a long day of work and class. At work two young first year associates wanted to take me to lunch to practice their English skills. After 4 or so years with the firm they go to the US for a masters in law degree or to work f or a firm for a few years and need to become fluent in English to do that and also to pas the TOEFL exam. This was fun, we went to a Japanese restaurant (read: tiny meal). The mean was a small cup of some kind of relish, a tiny piece of cooked cold fish smaller than my palm, some miso, and a small bowl of rice. Communication was difficult but interesting! I did a lot of slow and stupid questions again. After class we went to a place that was recommended to get small household items called D2s which is right next to school. I wanted a cheap full length mirror for the apartment so I can see what I look like in my frumpy commuting shoes before work and Chris wanted a lint roller and some other items. This place had better process than Tokyu Hands and we got some necessities, through the cheapest mirror was $20 it was nice so I went for it. Unfortunately we grabbed the wrong one from the shelf and did not realize until we got home and opened it that we had actually bought a $50 mirror! There are really no returns in Japan so we were screwed. Well, it is a very nice self-standing wooden mirror which we will give away to someone who lives here when we leave! After this we ate at the Churriscaria in our neighborhood which is always busy. We ordered some roasted chicken, ½ each as opposed to a whole at the recommendation of our waiter. Unfortunately this was really small, but yummy and cheap at less than $10 each and came with some French fries which are a rarity!
In other news, work is good so far, most of what I do is large research on American law issues and reading English contracts with American companies and revising and red flagging them to maximize the interests of the firm's clients. Class is good too; there is more pressure to do reading and be on point here than back at UB where we are so comfy and familiar with class formats and professors. All of our classes are in English and most cover a combination of America and Japanese law. The classes Chris and I are taking are Introduction to Japanese Law, Comparative Employment Law, Introduction to Chinese Law, Chinese Business and Investment Law, International Intellectual Property Licensing, East-West Negotiations, and our Japanese Language class. We have class most evenings until 9pm or later except for Tuesday and our language classes are Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
One more quick side story. You may recall earlier in this blog, just a few days after we arrived, I said I thought I was jolted out of bed by an earthquake but it must have been my imagination. I just learned recently that there was in fact an earthquake at 3am that night! I am kind of bummed I wasn't awake to enjoy it fully!
