Brussels in a Day...
Entry 4 of 28 | show all | print this entry |

Today we slept in after our late night and spent some time in the morning booking some accommodations for the cities we are planning to visit soon. When we finally headed out it was overcast but not raining and we headed back into the busy part of town. It was swarming with tourists today and there was a Little Italy, Little Greece, and more. I wanted to try to get out of the tourist area for a more affordable lunch but Chris got sweet-talked by a guy standing outside of his restaurant and we went into one fo the touristy open air cafes called LePetit Bruxells where the lunches were rather pricey- about 18 Euro for a fixed price. I had "mussels in Brussels" which apparently is something everyone likes to do, as well a trying the "Waterzooi"- a local traditional dish which is basically a Flemish chicken soup with vegetables.
We declined the dessert because I was set on having a Belgian waffle! After some slow Euro style service at the restaurant we moved on to see some sights. I found a waffle on the way- they eat them here off of street carts just wrapped in some paper- at is was SOOO good I wish I just had three of them for lunch instead!
They are warm and have some spots of crispy carmelized sugar on the outside- awesome. After the waffle we visited my favorite place in Brussels- the Grand Place.
This is hard to describe- it is basically a giant town square surrounded on all four sides with magnificent ornate building guilded in gold and full of pillars and statutes. There are cafes and people taking picture everywhere- it is quite a sight. Most of central Belgium can be explored on foot and we also walked to the Belgian Parliamant, the Palace,
Saint Michel cathedral,
, the Royal Park,
and the Manequin Pis- some super-famous statute of a little cherub urinating.
Tired out from all the walking we came back to the room for a rest because Chris was coming down with a cold...
