Today we headed back to the Air and Space Museum and then hit the National Art Gallery. The Space Museum was cool. We learned how computers have helped advance airplane and aircraft design. We saw an Apollo lunar module like the one that landed on the moon. It was the one that was built for a second mission but was never used because of the complete success of the first mission. We also got to design an aircraft using computer graphics.
We saw two shows at the Einstein Planetarium. The first was about black holes. A black hole is a puncture mark in the fabric of the space/time continuem. The gravity is so strong there that it's like trying to stop yourself from going over the edge of a waterfall. The closer you get, the stronger the current (gravity) is. Scientists think that the flip side of a black hole is a white hole, which spews out the matter and energy that the black hole sucked in. At the center of most galaxies is a massive black hole called a mega-black hole. We also saw a star show and learned about some spring constellations. Someone told the presenter that the constellation Pegasus looked like Sponge Bob Square Pants.
We saw a lot of paintings and statues at the National Art Gallery. They have a great collection of impressionist paintings, including some beautiful Monets. We also saw works by Leonardo DaVinci, Mary Cassat, John Singer Sargent, Degas, Stewart, Renoir, Van Gough, and John Singleton Copley. Ben got to brush up on his Greek mythology by looking at the Greek statues. Abi got to see the original Monet that she has a copy of hanging in her room.
On the way home, we walked through Chinatown and saw the Friendship Archway. We went to an Irish pub and restaurant, called Fado. We had fish 'n chips and corned beef and cabbage and pot pie. It was great!
We wanted to go inside the Washington Monument tomorrow, but we can't get tickets, so we're going to hit the zoo.
