Namaste!
Khajuraho is a small town with lots of annoying men but it is all worth it after seeing the kama sutra temples. That's not what they're called, officialy they're the Khajuraho Temples. No one is quite sure why these were built. A few theories:
1. They suggest that sex was a way of practising restraint.
2. A how-to manual for adolescent boys growing up in all male schools.
3. The figures were thought to prevent the temples from being struck by lightning.
4. These are tantric images and gratification of the baser instincts is one way o transcend the evils of the world and achieve enlightenment.
5. Representation of life as it was in their society.
There are over 20 temples spread throughout the city. I hired an auto-rickshaw driver to take me around. Each temple generally has three bands of scultures each of which are about 3 feet high. Here are some pics, maybe some of you can learn a thing or two...
Tomorrow I'm leaving for Varanasi to finally see the Ganges and I'm looking forward to staying somewhere for more than two days. Hope you are well.
peace,
Jen
