Another day and another ferry !! This time off to Koh Phangan ! We arrive at the main harbour and catch a taxi over some of the dodgiest terrain ever !! We again went over mountains and dirt tracks to reach our resort on the lovely beach of Thong nai pan yai.
This resort is a million miles away from a tourist trap , its where ardent travelers go to find peace and tranquility. The main road was nothing but a dirt track and a couple of shops , there were about 8 resorts on the beach ............perfect! We arrived at about 2pm and made arrangements to go by boat to the full moon party.
We thought we would make a bit of an effort a dress up, we were so lucky , tropical paradise and party time ....
We ate hoping that the rain would stop ,as we were eating there was a big bang in the kitchen and flames appeared! we were soon eating our food by candlelight as the electric kept going on and off , could this night get much worse?.....it did! , the sea was a little choppy and then the news spread that the boats were cancelled and we would have to take a taxi !! A taxi over dirt track mountains in a monsoon! It was time for me to make a heroic dash to the room to grab our macs , now being the first day i was not to sure of my surroundings and found myself running around the resort looking for our room getting soaked through.
Accepting the fact that we were going to go the party like sewer rats we trudged to the taxi. This is where we met a lovely Irish couple called Sarah and Donough, and then the journey!! We slowly made our way up the decaying dirt path , and then we suddenly ground to a halt half an hour into the journey, half an hour from anywhere , we were stuck
As we got to the party the rain completely stopped and it looked as though the rain never touched this part of the island. We turned up like fishermen as everyone was dressed up smartly. We ditched our macs in the taxi and headed towards the beach.
We got our first bucket of the evening and went to the beach with Sarah and Donough , yes, i was back on the buckets! As we got there the beach was alive with a mass of people and music everywhere. We decided to embrace the party and to get some UV body paint!! , Jen looked amazing with pretty flowers and butterflies , I had skeleton bones up my arm and Sarah had a flowery pattern , poor old Donough opted for an Irish shamrock that ultimately turned out to look like a little green Willy and testicles painted on the side of his face
There were thousands of people there so, as you can imagine the queues for the toilet were huge , I escorted Jen to the toilet and i quickly got to the gents i returned and Jen was still in the queue having barley moved. As i went to stand with Jen, a young Thai lady standing behind her looked at the queue , looked at me , shrugged her shoulders and proclaimed "I have d**k before boldly walking into the gents to stand at the urinal.
We were a bit worse for wear after a few more buckets when i foolishly left Jen with Sarah and Donough to go the toilet. I returned to discover she had gone through her repertoire of father Ted impressions , to which Sarah retaliated with coronation street impressions. We spent the next hour or so updating them on coronation street as they have been traveling for several months and were very behind in the soap world.
The party was great , it was an amazing night , no trouble , just good fun and dancing I managed to drag Jen away before sunrise because I'm very old a need to sleep regularly!
The journey back to the resort was far easier as we were again in the back of a pick up truck The full moon was lighting the sky like a strobe , as we passed over the mountains the moonlight was reflecting off the top of the palm trees and illuminating the morning fog , the smells were amazing because of the earlier rain and the noise of crickets could be heard over the noisy engine
The following days were blessed with pure sunshine , we mainly lazed around the beach and pool where Jen got stuck into a good book. We became Frisbee masters and also became addicted to a resort called the Dolphin bungalows.
If you ever visit Phangan, you must stay here. Its quite tricky though as you cannot make a reservation you just have to turn up and hope for the best. The ambiance was so nice , log booths set in the shade of palm trees on the beach and the food was amazing!
We also went on a boat cruise to go snorkeling , where we found out that the waterproof camera is not so waterproof! its now dead so no more fish shots I'm afraid folks! Bottle beach is lovely and we made a little Australian friend on a trek or should I say 'jog' to a waterfall. We had to run as the boat was not waiting long and it was 2km away! At least Jen got her running fix.
We loved our time here , it seemed to go so quickly. The resort grew on you so much , we could of stayed there longer but we had to leave and keep marching onward!
We hope you are enjoying reading our travels and hope everyone is ok back home? Sorry we have not been in touch much, but as previously mentioned there is a lack of good internet connection.
