As we were packing up to leave Morro Bay I thought "I'd better just check that Highway 1 is open"  and went into the reception to check the road conditions.

To explain, whilst we were in California there were terrible forest fires buring all along parts of the coast.  The fires were so bad that some of the roads were being closed.

Highway 1 is the road that runs right up the coast and through a stretch of road called Big Sur.  Big Sur is a 90 mile strech of spectacular scenery and coastline.  Big Sur was a big part of our Californian Road Trip.

And so back to asking for an update on whether Highway 1 is open - you bet - it was closed the whole way!!
So having endured Morro Bay for 2 days we were now going to miss the entire stretch of Big Sur because the road was closed - you can imagine our frustration.

So we travelled up the unscenic and very boring 101 road until we could join the Highway 1 again.  We backtracked down Highway 1 for about 10 miles to where the road closure started and what did we find, but the most georgeous fantastic beach and the sun was shining!!!  I have never seen Heather move so fast out of the car, into her bikini and literally ran to the beach to catch some rays.

We stayed on the beach until the fog rolled in, happiness restored and headed to Santa Cruz.
