Wednesday 13th June. My Birthday. Having reached the grand old age of 29, I felt it was best to not do anything too exciting, so I didn't. But it was not originally so, as i had planned to dive the SS Yongala, a ship wreck 30m below the sea just south of Townsville, a top 10 dive site in the world. Rough seas brought an end to that idea, however, and so Jen and I embarked on our trip into the 'real' Australia - the outback. Our first destination was to be the mining town of Mount Isa, or 'the isa' as Aussies call it. i don't know why, maybe it was too long a name before, and so they abreviated it like they do everything else. Jen "I-can-be-ready-in-half an-hour-Cleaver" took an hour to get ready and so we left late and thus didn't arrive at our planned destination but 120km short in a town called Cloncurrey. From 8 till 4 we drove - a total of 770km, stopping twice for 'go go juice' and entertained ourselves singing along to the crap cd's we bought because I blew up the mp3 player in the first 3 weeks of the trip. (see that Jen?, how I just snuck that in there in the hope no-one would notice) Boy was i popular that week! We also developed the 'outback wave' which requires you to lift a finger off the steering wheel in acknowledgement of any cars you pass, and developed a game that required you to guess which driver would wave back. WE WERE BORED OK! And I amused myself by finding the longest straight road i could. 27km was the record. No bends, kinks or wheel turning at all. Jeez this is a big country....
