Welcome to the mecca of all backpacker meccas. If you cannot find cheap
beer, free food, a pole dancing competition or get laid here you won't
get it anywhere. Lucky for us we were only on the look out for one of
those and we didn't have to show our boobies, snog a dog or pass oranges
under our chins for it.indeed hurrah for free food. With our bellies
full we decided to paint the town red. We went to each night spot to
either be told 'oh naa mate don't bother coming in here tonight its
shit, come back tomorrow' or 'naa mate it won't get busy in here until at least
1 o clock' which was way past our bedtime. so we went back to the first
place where the dj was dropping some phat dirty basslines, mixing some
old skool tracks and showed off his excellent scratching skills. Now
that you have heard my impression of prince charles trying to sound down
with yoof culture I am delighted to report that we had an excellent
night, befriending the dj, his wife, the bar staff and a mad dancing kiwi
wearing back to the future shoes.

As much as I instantly hated cairns it quickly grew on me and if I had
an income it would have been so much fun. You can't help but spend
money here, they even have a 5* backpackers hostel that will leave you 180
dollars lighter for one night.jeepers. We figured that as mass tourism
had hit cairns at point blank range we might be bettter off waiting to
visit the great barrier reef from port douglas. The boats from cairns
all seem to take more people than the entire population of china on a
daily basis and all visit the same islands and reefs. Cairns Lagoon

Now it doesn't take
an eco warrior to work out the effect that has on an endangered
underwater bio/eco system. So we opted to see the gbr from the air. Albeit
without the champagne and deluxe picnic lunch this time, hmm maybe our
standards are slipping. We jumped aboard the tiniest aircraft, only
marginally bigger than something you could buy from the lego shop, and cruised
over some of the biggest reefs, dropping to only meters above the sea
to look at marine life and swooping home over the daintree NP. The gbr
is truly amazing from the air. What looks like beach and surf is really
continental shelves. Once more our photos won't do it justice (maybe
peter lik should come with us next time) but this really the only way to
see such a fantastic natural wonder.

another night out in town was to be our supergay experience, no neither have us have started batting for the other side. we found ourselves raising the roof at the gayest "gay bar, gay bar" you have ever seen ever. all of dorothy's friends were out that night in their best white navy suits (well hello sailor), drag queens, two elderly gentlemen in their full on leather "s and m" outfits with matching handlebar moustaches, lots of nipples on display, black and gold fairy wings and a lady boy (very beautiful but the BIG hands gave it away) and well if i mention they played a supped up heavy euro trash style version of total eclipse of the heart that might help paint the picture for you! the funniest was upon retelling this story at the campsite the following night a yound guy from holland said " well yesh you know i am thinking thish shounds like jusht shomething normal on a tueshdays night in amshterdam".
