Unfortunately the wet weather stayed with us during our brief stay at Cape Hillsborough National Park. The howling wind and the constant noise of a large bags of spanners being dropped on the roof did not motivate us to rise early for the sunrise that also brought with it the very reason for our visit, watching young kangaroos coming to play in the early morning surf. lucky for me, as old grumpy chops stayed in bed, the rain subsided at about 6am and I walked down to the beach alone. it's an odd sensation being the only person on such a dramatic landscape at such an hour, with the day ahead full of expectancy. so I waited and waited some more, checking out any potential raw materials I could use to russtle up a small shelter should the heavens open upon me. Oh yes I have seen Ray Mears and I had no doubt I could survive adverse weather conditions using little more than some sand, a dead fish carcass and some seaweed for protection. My thoughts were suddenly interrupted by the sight of 6 female roos boinging out of the woods hopping merrily down the beach, in the same way I imagine a bunch of little old ladies might in bournemouth after spiking each others morning tea with something rather lively cape hillsbourough beach

. It was most excellent and apparently the only place in Australia you will capture roos in the surf. They lept around chasing after each other as well as flirty seagulls and were quite inquisitive of me. Without getting all spiritual (man) it was a real charm to be this close and observing these bizarre creature`s morning habits. After an hour or so I headed back to the van to excitedly retell my stories of being at one with nature and having shaken hands with a roo and how I felt like dr dolittle, only to be grunted at as it was still only 7am. I bet Richard Attenborough doesn't get responses like that.

(In my defence, I had dropped a 5kg bag of ice on my foot the day before, and then gone running on it in bare feet(whoops) so i was in a lot of pain that night and by 6am I had had about 3 hours sleep.) - Chris

Well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Go hard or go home
I'm riveted to the blood and guts epic that is your travel journal. Gushing claret from leech attacks on the ankle, mangled spines and icepacks the size of Franz Josef. Defo, go hard or go home. Glad you having a great time. Will look out for GKI on your reccomendation on my next visit! Stop hogging the east coast and piss off somewhere else now. You're making me green with envy!!xx
