This is the largest sand island in the world, surrounded by shark infested waters that promised us paradise sands, stunning views, crystal waters and photo opportunities beyond our dreams. Unfortunately for us our 3 day trip started with darkened skies and rain that lasted all day and I thought this was the 'sunshine state' grrrrrr. We opted for a tour, as opposed to a self drive, as basically we couldn't be arsed with 4x4 navigation, dealing with pesky dingoes, camping with feral creatures, not to mention the teenage vermin that might afflict themselves on us and I really didn't fancy having to bury my 'personal waste' as facilities are few and far between. so on with the tour...day one wasn't really marred by the almost british weather as most of it was spent walking through rain forest. We were of the opinion the fashion police may arrest us without bail if we bought waterproof ponchos so we braved the cold and wet in little more than shorts and tshirts. Yes we were freezing but more importantly we didn't look like a pair of knobbers at eurodisney
We did however relish the opportunity of sleeping on a proper bed in a lodge, ah the joy of being able to sit up and roll about. I think we both slept like starfish...just because we could.
Day 2 promised blue skies but they soon disolved into more grey clouds and a wind that was positively siberian. This was such a shame as this was our busiest day visiting the champagne pools at indian head, lake mckenzie, 75 mile beach, eli creek, the pinnacle rocks at catherine beach and the moheno shipwreck (the most photographed hunk of rust in the world). when my mum compares the photo of her daughter by the moheno and the one of her son, it will be clear that tom is the one with lovely long blonde hair, a great tan and stood in a heatwave. I however look as though i could be in a car park in barnsley in october wearing a borrowed pacamac. great! The day did end with a lovely sunset that we watched from the beach and upon walking back to our lodge we came across our first snake....crikey!
Day 3 was a different story with excellent proper fraser island weather. It lifted everyone's mood and we had a super day at lake wabby, running around the vanilla ice cream sand dunes that stretched as far as the eye could see. We half expected to see omar sharif on the horizon. After lunch we revisited lake mckenzie which was truly stunning, so serene and beautiful and best of all deserted. we swam with terapins, played frisbee on the soft white silica sand that exfoliated your skin and cleaned your jewelry and relished the lovely views. Now we feel we have really seen fraser as it should be. hurrah.
1 basin lake
. Basin lake, which I am sure looks beautiful in the sun with its white sands and emerald waters, just looked murky and tragically uninviting on this occasion. We did however relish the opportunity of sleeping on a proper bed in a lodge, ah the joy of being able to sit up and roll about. I think we both slept like starfish...just because we could.

Ahhh, how your online journal has stirred the old memory banks! What has happened to Hervey Bay? The beach was nice in 99. Fraser is lovely isnt it? Lake Wabby much fun although very deep very quick I recall! Any dingo encounters. The Bux are in Putnry today just off to watch the boat race. Come on Cambridge! You going to Noosa? Al x
PS: Thanks for the swan tribute at Buxton and yesssss, its a shout about watching Spin! Enjoy!x
Putney
I meant Putney, not Putnry!
