Our route to Melaka was great. We got on a gem of a bus for the trip from Cameron Highlands - massive seats that nearly totally reclined, Air Con to the last and a million times better than anything else we've been on. We had read that Melaka was a nice little town but knew nothin else about it - It wasn't due to rain there and was close to Singapore so it was good enough for us.
We arrived at the bus terminal and on the way for a badly needed bathroom break we met "George" who convinced us his place was the place to be in Melaka - Its funny how good you become at determining if someone is a complete wanker or not when your faced with the decision every day and we decided he wasen't so we grabbed a taxi and made our way into Melaka to his hostel.
Turned out to be a really nice place, minus the lack of A/C. We had a quick wash and headed out to have a look around. Melaka used to be a major shipping port specializing in expensive items like silk and jewels etc...all this before it got raped for centuries by the Dutch, Portugese and of course the English! There's a large river running directly through the centre, of the town only used for tours these days. Hugely influenced by European architecture, the town itself is really nice to walk around. The first night we were there, there was a biker rally on beside the hotel. We headed down for a look and it was great craic, loads of people round. In the middle there was a stage for the entertainment - this included a hillarious group of young lads doing some type of hip hop dance, It all looked a bit ridiculous, but sure whatever floats your boat. Next up was a group of young one's (13/14 years old) who were dressed and danced like strippers in training. Anyway, we headed up to chinatown for the night markets. These were by far the best we've seen so far, alot more civilised than what we've been used to. Loads of nik nak things everywhere, pretty much the usual but with a few more additions. Nightlife was confined nearly to one area 3/4 of the way down this street, a strip with fairly good bars etc.
Next day we went around the town doing a bit of exploring, we had a look at the massive Portugese ship replica they have, then lots of aimless wandering through the side streets in the town. The heat was getting the better of us at this stage, so we headed for the massive shopping mall. Enroute we passed the cordoned off area where the national paintball championships were happening - Yes there are actually people who take paintballing seriously - as you can imagine, pudgy, geeky dudes and very few girlfriends cheering them on!! We sat down in the comfort of the Air Con in the the shopping centre and spent the afternoon hiding from the sun in the cinema upstairs - some Nicholas Cage rubbish (Choices were very limited ok) AND they had no proper popcorn - only this sweetened rubbish. That's something we might have left out in early Malaysian blogs - In general, from what we can the Malaysians are a kind of a "soft" race of people, very friendly and stuff, but strike me as being a bit lazy and they LOVE their creature comforts. There's a huge amount of them overweight, and they kind of just mope round the place, stuffing ice cream and whatever into them. (That's an awful generalisation - but you get the gist)
The next day was much of the same, bit of exploring and eating in the morning, another cinema trip in the major heat - "Real Steel" this time with Hugh Jackman which is a really good one, then we eventually made it to the night boat, which was.....grand, bit boring but has to be done. Our time was coming to an end in Melaka so we went back to our sauna of a room and packed for the bus trip to Singapore the next day.
All in all, we had a really good time in Melaka, nothing over exciting about the place, but well worth the visit.
