Although we are entering this from Cairns we wanted to tell you about the last two days at Ayres Rock Resort.
We still can't believe we are in the middle of this great adventure. The flight from Sydney to Uluru was quite short and uneventful, thank goodness. We stayed at the Lost Camel Hotel at the Ayres Rock Resort and, once again, were impressed with the standard of the accommodation provided by Freedom Australia, a UK based company, and would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone wishing to visit this vast, incredible country.
We went from nice Summer weather, with a few clouds, in Sydney to the middle of a desert, with desert temperatures. Most of the day was very sunny but then, just as we were about to set off to see the Aboriginal Cultural Centre and then on to see the sunset over Uluru, the sky clouded over. It was still extremely hot but quite cloudy and we were quite concerned on our way to "the Rock".\
The Cultural Centre was fascinating, but a bit too much reading for Jeff!! They are an amazing people and have stories and beliefs for everything. Some of the stories about Uluru and the creatures, both real and mythical, who live in the surrounding area, were wonderful. Their beliefs are uncluttered, basic and fundamental, and we could probably learn a lot from them if we were not so materialistic.
After the experience that was the Cultural Centre we went on to Uluru. It is just huge and you cannot imagine how huge this red pebble, in the middle of a desert, actually is. It is awe inspiring.
While we were standing, feeling very humbled looking at this colossal, mythical rock, would you believe - the sun came out. Straight away it changes colour, and all through the sunset the colours change subtly as the sun goes down. It is an experience we will never forget and although we did not have much time there it was well worth the visit.
We have attached four photos, the ones of us were taken while it was still cloudy and the two of the rock were taken during the sunset, so hopefully you will be able to see the difference.
We are leaving Cairns tomorrow for our drive south and will update you in a couple of days as to this amazing place where the rain forest meets the barrier reef beaches.
