On Friday, we bid farewell to Koh Lanta and headed to Phuket for 3 nights. The trip from Koh Lanta to Phuket was very easy. We were picked up from our hotel and taken to Saladan Pier where we boarded a ferry to Koh Phi Phi. Once at Koh Phi Phi we transferred to another ferry which was going to Phuket. It turned out that it was the same company that we traveled with last year - Phi Phi Cruiser. We were both surprised at how much they had upped their game in a year. The boat was nicer, there was free pop and water throughout the 1.5 hour journey and they brought around delicious pineapple and watermelon. We couldn't have been happier. I didn't even feel seasick on this trip, like I did last year.

Once at Phuket, we climbed over 2 other ferries to get onto the pier. This is quite common. To get onto our ferry leaving Koh Lanta, we had to climb over 1 ferry. Lots of fun with a large backpack.

We had prepurchased our minivan shuttle to our Kata Beach hotel on the ferry and were taken to the minivan. Turns out that we were in the wrong one. After a bit of confusion, we were taken to a different van that really had no room. I was squished in the front between the driver and Jeff. I had to mind my legs as, of course, the minivan was a standard. Part way through the trip, my butt started to get really really hot. I must have been sitting right above the engine block - lovely. I'm not a big fan of driving up front as you get to see all the crazy driving that goes on. Usually, if we are in the back, I can just look out the window and ignore the driving. This is not possible when sitting next to the driver.

We arrived at our guesthouse and then walked 10 minutes to the actual beach. It was around 5:30, so the sun was starting to set. We walked down the beach which was lined with loungers and umbrellas and full of people. We haven't been on a beach this busy in a really long time. On our way back we walked through the town, which was also really busy. After being on pretty sleepy islands for the last 3 weeks, this took a little getting used to, but is perfect timing as we will be heading to Vietnam on Tuesday. We stopped for dinner and had a great cheeseburger with salad bar. I don't think I've had a burger this entire trip, so it was much enjoyed.

On Saturday, we spent the day at the beach. We had chosen Kata Beach as it is supposed to be the best off beach snorkeling on Phuket. We weren't holding our breathes on this one, so we rented some loungers with an umbrella at the north end of the beach and swam, read and had lunch. We were surprised at how reasonable everything was. After lunch, we decided to give the snorkeling a go. Turns out the snorkeling is amazing! There was lots of reef off the beach with schools of fish and lots of interesting, colourful fish. There were lots of fish that we had never seen before, which was surprising! On our snorkel, we saw many schools of small and medium sized fish, a barracuda, a couple spotted pufferfish, 3 or 4 kinds of parrotfish, angelfish and queen angelfish, starfish and trigger fish like in Hawaii, which were same same, but different (This is a common phrase meaning that they are slightly different, but basically the same). Snorkeling will be on tomorrow's agenda without a doubt.
