Our quick stopover in Greece involved a stay in the Hotel Mati, just east of Athens, with a beautiful view of the Aegean Sea.

From there, we caught an overnight flight across the equator to Johannesburg.  My father tells me that when he was in the Navy, he and his shipmates would "Splice the Mainbrace" when they crossed the Equator.  This wonderful event involved being issued a double ration of rum for the day.  (The only other event that merited this gluttonous celebration was the Queen's Birthday.)  Unfortunately, Olympic Airways was not aware of this tradition.  I awoke at 2:45 a.m. (local time, somewhere) - still recovering from the flight's complementary antipasto platter of an hour earlier.  The computer graphic representing our plane's position on the screen at the front of the cabin showed us crossing over the Equator at Lake Victoria.  Yahoo!... I asked for a glass of water.
