We flew out of São Paulo at 8am the next day (I know, more flying!) and arrived in Lima, Peru, which sits between dusty Andes mountains and the rolling surf of the Pacific. The guidebook was right by saying that flying into the city, it looks more like a Middle Eastern landscape than South American. From where I've been, it certainly looked like a cross between India and Kuwait. However, on ground-level, it didn't feel or look anything like that. We were staying in the posho district of Miraflores, like the Kensington & Chelsea of London, which is the nicest, safest and closest district to the sea.
Well, damn my preconceptions. Yes, we were in Miraflores and, yes, Lima obviously has an edge to it because there are armed police everywhere and armed private security guards keeping watch over every important and semi-important building, but from what we saw of it, it was ten times more pleasant than we expected
We spent the afternoon wandering through Miraflores and then, being pressed for time due to our flight to Cusco the next day, we caught a tourist bus in the evening to take us around the city centre dating back to the Spanish colonisation in the 1500s. It was a great time to do the tour as all the old public buildings such as the Presidential Palace and the Department of Justice were lit up around the main square, or Plaza de Armas. It also meant we could visit the newly renovated park which has about a dozen different fountains that light up at night. We were treated to an incredible light and sound display at the main fountain, the like of which we have never seen before.
