We traveled together to Panama city on very good roads. About 6 hours in the saddle today with no problems. It was good to look in the rear view mirror and see three bikes behind me. The traffic was heavy as we got near the city. This is a very modern city with lots of sky scrapers. It looks like Manhattan, really. I counted 12 high rises under construction. Donald Trump has the tallest one still being built, go figure. Panama has the best roads by far in Central America.
We hired a driver and went to the Miraflores locks near town. It was a very impressive site. We had a cold drink and watched several boats travel through the locks. It is fascinating to see how fast the water goes up and down. In about 10 minutes a freighter goes from way above the locks to deck level, ready for the gates to open and continue on through. There are 8 locks total. There are several small train type of engines on the front and back that keep the freighter in the middle of the locks and pull it through. I encourage you to Google the canal and read about it. Over 22000 people died while working on the ditch, mostly from disease. I wish we had more time to spend here but we will have to go because of darkness and hunger.
