A little closer to home than say Georgia or Ukraine...
Message to PC Uzbekistan volunteers:
Developments in the Kyrgyz Republic continue to evolve at an increasingly rapid pace. There have recently been violent demonstrations in Bishkek that reportedly led to opposition occupaton of several Government buildings, including the Presidential Administative Complex. In light of ongoing civil unrest throughout the Kyrgyz Republic, Peace Corps Bishkek Kyrgyzstan has activated a Kyrgyzstan Countrywide Consolidation of all Volunteers. Peace Corps Bishkek continues to monitor the situation closely. We will keep you all informed when we receive additional information.
There have been no reports of any incidents inside Uzbekistan.
Below see the Warden Message issued by US Embassy in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Uzbekistan would like to bring to the attention of American citizens residing or traveling in Uzbekistan the following message distributed via the Consular Warden System of the U.S. Embassy in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan: WARDEN MESSAGE: MARCH 23, 2005
On March 20th, 21st, and 22nd,political demonstrations in southern Kyrgyzstan have led to clashes between government and opposition forces. The continued instability in Jalalabad city and Osh city has significantly added to concerns about the security situation for Americans residing and visiting there. There is also a concern that this political instability could spread to other regions around the country. As of noon on March 22nd there were conflicting reports that the Osh-Bishkek road and the Osh airport have been closed periodically due to protests. Therefore, the Department of State is warning U.S. citizens to defer travel to southern Kyrgyzstan. American citizens in the Kyrgyz Republic are also urged to review their personal security situations and to take those measures they deem appropriate to ensure their wellbeing, including consideration of departure from the country.
As a result of these concerns, the U.S. Peace Corps has decided to remove several Peace Corps Volunteers from the Jalalabad and Osh Oblasts as a safety precaution.
