What I did
We got ourselves sorted and headed down to the hotel restaurant for a cooked brekkie. Bloody good it was too. One thing I had learnt on this trip was that it was important to load up your guts to get you through the long days.
The day had dawned beautifully fine YET AGAIN and we arrived at San Diego Zoo nice and early. The good news was that it was pretty quiet despite it being school holidays here in the U.S.
After picking up a pair of cheap sunnies for Danielle, we jumped on a 40 minute guided open top bus tour which traverses 75% of the zoo
San Diego Zoo is considered one of the best zoos in the world. It houses over 3,700 animals and the zoo pioneered the concept of open-air, cageless exhibits that re-create natural animal habitats.
We checked out the monkey trail first and saw all sorts of different species of monkey including chimpanzees, baboons, orangutans and the best of all, the gorillas.
The family favourites though for the day would have to be the bears. In particular, the Giant Pandas and the Polar Bears. We saw a Giant Panda and her cub. Mum was asleep and the cub up a tree. While we were there, the cub climbed down the tree and tried to wake up mum. I have tried the same with Wendy with limited success but with the same grumpy result. The Polar bears were really cool also. One was playing with a barrel in the water. Awesome to watch!
Next, we checked out the Hippos, Tigers, Zebras, Elephants, Reindeer, Panthers, Flamingos, Cougars (not the 40 year old plus women type), Grizzly Bears, Koalas, Eagles, Foxes, Turtles, a range of different snakes, Komodo Dragons, and a heap of other animals
Danielle wanted to watch a 4D movie based on the animated film, Ice Age. I thought it was junk but she enjoyed it. As we were now on the far side of the zoo, we jumped on Skyfari, the overhead gondola, which took us back to the park entrance and main eateries.
We grabbed a very late lunch of burritos and beer. It was hot for christ sake ! The girls went and checked out the souvenir shops and Danielle bought a couple of things. Wendy was restrained. While they were checking out the shops, I had a bit more of a look around the zoo.
We all met up an hour later and caught the free shuttle back to the hotel.
Despite being pretty buggered, we went for a wander down the road and had dinner at a beautiful restaurant in a neighbouring hotel. There was a lady playing background music on a piano who was great and who took a shine to Danielle, particularly after Danielle tipped her :)
With another big day ahead tomorrow, we headed back to the hotel and watched the final of the TV show 'The Voice'. Well 2 of us did. Wendy was out like a light :)
Over and out !
