I had another sleep-in this morning as I had a nice cruisy day planned. I was also going to make sure I had some of the food which New York is famous for - an American hot-dog and a New York Pizza. Couldn't be fagged getting a bagel though.
After getting up and organised, I thought I'd better check out what was on the agenda tomorrow and get a few things sorted, like which trains I needed to get at what time to ensure I made it in time for my Amtrak connection to Niagara Falls. I also decided I better check the finances to make sure everything was on track in that department.
With the admin out of the way, I headed down to my subway station at Union Square
I jumped on the train and made my way to the corner of 5th Avenue and 57th Street or as my wife Wendy would call it, 'heaven'. I was off to Tiffany of New York. For me, it was like going to hell in a handcart !
This was the flag-ship store for the famous high-end jewellery manufacturer and it is pretty impressive with different floors dedicated to silver, gold, gems, crystals and also leather hand bags, wallets, dinner-ware, cutlery and so on. It would appear they now no longer just specialise in jewellery. They have taken a whole lot of other products, put the 'Tiffany' label on it, put it in a nice green box or bag, and marked it up by 700 percent. The thing is, you actually have to ask for the prices as they don't show the price tags on any of their products.
You do get personalised service however and they serve you drinks (non-alcoholic). They also have dedicated private lounges on the top floor for guests/VIP's spending the big bucks. I was only there to take photos though and get some prices on items which my darling back home was interested in
Now, whilst the place was classy, I did have to laugh when a guy and his Mrs walked on to the third floor with his dog on a leash. I assumed he must have been blind but he had no stick or Stevie Wonder stagger going on. He wasn't blind. In fact, I think he could see better than I could. I would have fair pissed myself if the dog had taken a big crap on their plush carpet :)
I left there feeling light-headed and wandered around the corner to Central Park. I spent 20 minutes watching some street performers, of which there is no shortage of in New York. They were break-dancing, doing somersaults and jumping around. Pretty impressive.
I grabbed me an American hot-dog from one of the street vendors. Ya gotta do it when you are in New York City apparently. It was shit, so don't bother !
The sun was shining, the birds were chirping and the bloody yellow cab drivers were honking their horns as usual
I jumped back on the train and headed for Greenwich Village to have a nosey around there. There wasn't much to see other than some nice restaurants and cafes. It is apparently a popular area with the middle to upper class of New York though, so I fitted right in.
I made my way back to my hotel and decided to head to the bar around the corner wearing my recently acquired Washington Capitals t-shirt to watch game 6 of the 7 match quarter finals in the hockey between the Washington Capitals and the New York Rangers. The Capitals were leading the series 3 -2 and could wrap it up with a win tonight at Madison Square Garden.
Unfortunately, I balls it up as the game had already finished before I left the hotel and the Rangers won levelling the series with 1 match to play. I decided to head out wearing my t-shirt anyway to see what reaction I'd get. The answer, nothing. Apart from a guy from Washington DC who asked me the score, I didn't get so much as a jeer, let alone abused, beaten up, stabbed or shot
I stopped off at an Italian joint for dinner which had a great reputation for their New York Pizza. I kicked things off with a meatball entree which was done in a nicely flavoured tomato sauce and washed it down with a nice glass of Italian red. I also managed to nail most of the pizza which was delicious. I was now as full as Dolly Parton's bra.
I waddled back to my room and finished packing my bag for tomorrow's early morning departure and then hit the sack.
Over and out !
