In an attempt to ease our way into this whole back-packing thing, we booked ourselves into Haad Yao Bungalow View Resort for 4 nights. Hung out on beach. Bought trinkets, had massages, early morning yoga on the balcony. Eating by candle light along the beach. 750ml Chang beer for $3! Blown away by how genuinely friendly and happy all the locals are - that is, until they get behind the wheel, where even the most peaceful soul turns into a raging lunatic!
Full moon party at Haad Rin on 21st. Insane taxi ride in sawngthaew (converted ute). Tourists sharing horror stories of taxis rolling, and of hit and runs. Apparently you should never stop to help anyone who is injured in Thailand - if you call an ambulance, you become liable for all medical costs!.
No burning man, but still worth a go. Drinking Bacardi, coke and redbull from a bucket on the beach! 300 Baht ($12NZ - very economical). Danced to the music with somewhere between 10 and 20,000 other people. Ran into a couple of Australian girls who lead us to Purple Haze, a small secluded bar run by Sammy. The special shakes (made from distilled magic mushrooms and mangos - 500 Baht) come highly recommended. It's all about the neon! Met Aaron & partner Crystal - owner of Castle bar on Koh Tao and decided that would be a good place to go next. Returned to the beach and chilled out while watching the crowd of drunken revelers descend into deeper states of inebriation, then watched the Thai Lady boys (kathoey) pounce on the clueless intoxicated white boys, hoping to give them a night to forget!
Stayed the last 2 nights at Same Same Lodge at Haad Rin. Bit of a sleepy village between scheduled beach parties. Free wifi at the lodge but nearly got a punctured lung from the unruly bed springs and thumping bass from the bar below kept going until the wee hours. Still woke up in time for sunrise on the beach. People still out from night before. Sweedish massage, bit of shopping. More thumbnails ...
