Today we went to the Chernobyl Museum in Kiev.  Chernobyl is very close to Kiev and a part of the Ukraine.

Some facts about the disaster:
1. It happened at 1.23.48 on April 26/86
2. The accident was caused when workers on one shift didn't tell the new shift what experiments were happening.
3. When the melt down happened it destroyed unit #4. People were killed instantly.
4. Many firefighters were sent in to put out the fire with no knowledge of the danger.
5. The public in the area were not evacuated until 36hours after the accident.  Many got leathal doses of radiation area map

6. 600,000 people were involved in liquating the problem, many of them onsite and without adequate protection.  You can see smiles on the faces of the workers to pick up radio active material off the roof of unit #3.  They had no idea that they were being exposed.
6. 64 towns and villages are now un-inhabitable.
7. The government did not want to dispose of livestock that was infected, so they mixed the meat of irradiated cows with good meat at 80:20% until it was gone.
8. The radiation killed trees and plants and caused many mutations in the forest including wildlife.
9. Plants 1, 2 & 3 continued to operate beside the enclosed unit 4 until the year 2000.
10. The entire nothern hemisphere was infected by the contaminants including Canada, when on May 5, the nuclear contanimants floated over it.  Without the work the liquidators, who unkowningly gave their lives, the world would never be the same.
