I flew to CPH to have dinner with my friends Liz, Jason & Mike. Liz brought us to Umami, which has been described as Denmark's answer to Nobu. The food was fantastic, particularly this really creative appetizer that was eel, foie gras and nashi pears. The flavor was really unique. The service was also superb, especially since restaurant service in Europe is, on average, not as good as in the US since they rely less on tips. The waiter gave good wine recommendations and let us try a number of different wines before we chose a bottle.
Mike then came to STK where we continued our food tour of Scandinavia. In STK we tried Operakallaren, a 1 star. The room is opulent and has a great view (especially since at 22:00 it was still light out) - the food was also really good. Cafe Opera is also supposed to be a good restaurant that is less costly and it becomes a bar/ club in the evening.
On the 2nd night, I took Mike to one of my favorite places for Kottbullar (Swedish meatballs) - Gyldene Freden (The Golden Peace) in Gamla Stan. Unfortunately, they served it with boiled potatoes rather than the extremely yummy Swedish mashed potatoes (across the street at Jarnet, they served it with mashed & it is also good). Still, its a great meal and the restaurant has a long history in Stockholm - the upstairs room is where the Nobel Prize for Literature is decided every year.
