Long haul flights are still like childbirth... see entry number 3, way back in April.
The trouble is that the last one was after a lapse of 25 years. This time... 2 months. I was glad to get on that plane out of Rome to be heading towards the end and I knew this time what I wanted. The aeronautical equivalent to the birthing suite with the comfy double bed, drugs of my choice, peaceful pan-flute music, private midwife and preferably a garden view, thank you.
Rome check-in was quick and I asked if the plane was full. "Yes" said the Cathay clerk.
"Any chance of an upgrade" I cheekily and optimstically ventured?
She didn't say no, but turned to her computer. "Are you a Frequent Flyer?" she asked.
"Yes!" I exclaimed, thinking my $82 investment had just paid for itself. She started to type again and for one delicious moment, I thought was in as I reached for my card.
"With Cathay?" she asked.
"No, Qantas - all part of the same alliance!?..."
"No sorry - only Cathay Frequent Flyers."
And with that, all ideas of the birthing suite were jettisoned back to public labour ward level in Seat 68A at the opposite end of the 747.
With a chattering Chinese tour group.
With one hour's sleep overnight.
With a three hour transit in Hong Kong before onwards to Taipei.
One day, I will make it to the pointy end of a 747.
So thank goodness for the deluxe suite at the Waikoloa Hotel at around just AUD$75 a night. (That is in fact the basic room.) It's the Taipei equivalent of the birthing suite with ADSL, tassles, brocade and marble added. I might not come out of here until discharged in two days time!
