Today was a day trip to San Gimignano - a 13th Century Etruscan hilltop town north-west of Sienna and a one hour ride on the No.130 local bus. It boasts 14 towers (from an original 72!) within it's walls, a main drag (barely one car wide) now filled with tourist shops and tourists and many side streets and lanes to be explored.
Only one tower is open to the public to climb. Liz and I left that to Rob while we enjoyed views of the surrounding Tuscan countryide from street level. Then it was time for some serious shopping as there were many Florentine goods that we would be otherwise bypassing. Starting with leather. Unlike Australian bags or prices. And finishing with a bit more leather and a caffe latte.
Had to do it. Couldn't leave them behind when I was this close. Have learnt from experience that you never see the same thing again or for a vastly better price elsewhere, so just do it! Packing the suitcase to Cathay and Qantas's likings is going to prove a challenge. A bus trip back to Siena and an SMS from the Elsternwick neighbours who happen to be in - Siena! A coffee in the Piazza and introductions all round to Rosalba the ceramics lady as we walked back towards their car and chanced to meet Rob and Liz on the way! A change of camps and back to the Piazza with the latter, stopping once more at Rosalba's to contemplate some pasta plates...
Had to do it. Couldn't leave them behind when I was this close. Pasta nights at my place coming up!... With Panforte Margherita for dessert if anyone can find me a recipe. Not the ho-hum chocolate sort that we can easily procure in Melbourne, but a mixed fruit and nut variety that is to die for. My new found addiction. Almost as good as dark chocolate. Almost. Tomorrow morning, we leave the lovely Siena behind for a train trip south to Roma, our last stop in Europe. San Gimignano? Another great tip thanks, AJM. "All That You Can't Leave Behind" - U2.
