Long haul flights are like childbirth...
Entry 3 of 61 | show all | print this entry |
If you go long enough between episodes, long haul flights are like childbirth.
You forget how bad they are and do it again.
I have just spent fourteen hours wedged next to a large Pacific Island lady who oozed out from under the communal arm rest - of which she took ownership. Her right leg landed where my left one should have. Then she slept for the whole flight.
Fortunately, the Qantas staff were good, the food was quite reasonable and the movie selections were entertaining. Sleep was fitful so the long lines at LAX were not appealing. Customs and Immigration was straightforward but staff generally were snarly and unwelcoming. Especially when I hit the security check-in for the onward flight to Portland. Got pulled aside for the full body pat-down. Had my hand luggage pulled apart by two enormous Afro-Americans. Had the laptop swabbed for illicit drugs! (Didn't actually check the battery pack for bombs, but did the drugs...) "Don't touch that, Ma'm!" they yelled at me as I moved to show them something. "Step away from the case Ma'am!" they yell. I was fully expecting them to throw me over a table top and handcuff me next. Do I look THAT suspicious? Even after a 14 hour flight?
Never want to go near LAX again. So glad to find Catharine waiting at Portland - a much nicer airport.

Hi...I so empathize with you and feel that, because I am forced by where I live to fly out of LAX, that I personally owe you an apology for the rudeness of the staff there. I recently returned from Honolulu where going through the security line was actually a pleasure; they were kind, polite, and even pointed to where I could re-fill a water bottle that I had to empty...LOL. Such a world we live... show all

So they still snarl - nice to know it is not restricted to Hawaii! Did your camera survive the assault as mine got completely done over. Never seen a lap top swabbed before - what a novel experience. Your house is still standing. Say Hi to Bullseye for moi. Also have shopping list for you in UK - yes you have been warned - will restrain myself for Portland and the catalogue - sob!
